Copeland Oaks Announces Collins Scholarship Winners

Five area college students are winners of scholarships from the C. M. (Jerry) Collins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Permanently endowed by friends of the late Jerry Collins, the scholarship fund provides tuition assistance to Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center employees, their children and spouses attending college or technical schools. Mr. Collins, an entrepreneur who ran a variety of small business in the Sebring area, knew that a pool of good employees was vital to the success of any business. Since its inception in 2007, the fund has awarded over $50,000 in tuition assistance.

“The scholarship was created to help give something back to the employees who give so much to the residents at Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center,” explained Sally Collins, wife of Jerry Collins.

The 2017 Collins Scholarship winners are Tristen Brink, Heather Graham, Mercedes Fidoe, Melissa Kirskey, and Robbie Rouse.

A graduate of Sebring High School, Tristen will begin his sophomore year at Mount Union where he is majoring in Japanese. During his college career, Tristen plans to study in Japan and hopes to teach English in that country as he broadens his skills in the native Asian language. He is the son of Richard Brink, transportation specialist for Copeland Oaks.

Heather Gaham is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) at Kent State University. A West Branch High School graduate, Heather is the wife of Ed Graham who works in the Copeland Oaks Maintenance Dept. as a plumber.

Newly married, Mercedes (Fidoe) Heestand serves as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) at Crandall Medical Center and has decided to expand her career in caregiving by pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) at Kent State University.

Also entering the nursing profession is Melissa Kirksey who worked as a transportation specialist on the Copeland Oaks campus before entering Hannah Mullins School of Practical Nursing in Salem. A West Branch High School graduate, Melissa will be pinned this Fall and complete the program in Spring, 2018.

A 2017 Sebring High School graduate and sports stand-out, Robbie Rouse is the son of Rachel Rouse and grandson of Sharon Rouse, both Copeland Oaks employees. Robbie plans to attend The University of Akron where he will participate in the Honors Program studying computer science.

AUG 21

Eclipse Party

Thursday, August 21 | 11 am – 3 pm
Ever been invited to an Eclipse Party? This may be your chance of a lifetime! Mark your calendar, the 3rd Monday in August you will be treated to the first solar eclipse in over 35 years.

A solar eclipse is a lineup of the sun, moon and earth. The moon, directly between the sun and earth, casts a shadow over our planet creating darkness during daylight hours. The last one occurred February 26, 1979, but not many people saw it because it just clipped 5 states in the northwest U.S. and the weather was bleak.

Before that you have to go back to March 7, 1970! Since rare occurrences in nature are cause for celebration, Copeland Oaks is planning an Eclipse Party. Jackie Palmer, Director of Independent Living, Bambi Eisenmann, Crandall Medical Center Activities Director, and Heather Sedlacek have joined forces to plan the campus-wide celebration. Music, refreshments and, of course, eclipse viewing are planned.

We all know not to stare at the sun, right? Seems like common sense, but every time an eclipse comes around, a few people invariably try to watch it without special, protective eye wear and end up damaging their eyeballs.

Even during August’s solar eclipse, when the moon will travel across the sun and block part of the sunlight, you cannot look directly at the sun without very strong protective eyewear. Not just sunglasses — lenses that were designed specifically to filter out enough of the light that it doesn’t burn a hole through your retinas.

If you did try to look at it without your glasses, it would be “like a magnifying glass on a leaf when you were a kid,” according to an optometrist. That’s why Jackie, Bambi and Heather will be providing special eclipse viewing glasses throughout the Copeland Oaks campus on August 21!

A Message from Dave Mannion, CEO

Dave MannionStrategic planning is a common practice for organizations whether they are business, social or church related.

Strategic planning is also an organizational management tool that sets priorities, focuses energy and resources, and strengthens operations.

Thirdly, strategic planning ensures that employees and stakeholders are working towards a common goal and establishes an agreement around intended outcomes, setting an organization’s priorities.

All great products start with a clear strategy that is customer based and market-driven. Strategy not only ensures that we work on what matters, it also ensures that we communicate what matters to our team and to the organization.

Strategy is comprised of three parts: vision, goals and initiatives. Vision describes who the customers are, what customers need and how we plan to deliver a unique offering. Goals define what you want to achieve within a specific timeline. Initiatives are high-level efforts that will help us achieve our goals. The most important is vision which describes who the customers are, what customers need and how we plan to deliver a unique offering.

We feel that Copeland Oaks is a unique offering. With many levels of care and a variety of beautiful accommodations, Copeland Oaks can meet the needs and desires of just about anyone who is looking for a safe, vibrant, carefree lifestyle. We feel that our catered living apartments offer the economy of independent living the convenience and safety of an array of support services are an especially unique offering.

Strategic planners also listen to what their customers want. We hear you asking for help in caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We hear you asking for help in keeping them safe and preserving quality of life in the middle stages of the disease when personal safety is at risk. That’s why part of our strategic plan for fiscal year 2017-2018 includes expanding our Assisted Living facilities to include a memory care unit.

The new unit will have specially trained staff, dedicated life enrichment programs, spacious rooms with beautiful views and access to many of the amenities that the Copeland Oaks campus offers.

With no shortage of resources at our fingertips, it’s important to find the strategic plan that fits the needs of Copeland Oaks.

Meet The Bookworm, Kay Wyant

Kay and her husband Jim moved to their Copeland Oaks villa four years ago. Retired after 35 years of directing a Cuyahoga Falls preschool, Kay’s passion is reading – sometimes five books at a time! She’s perfect as our volunteer library director.

  • Hosts Library Update on Copeland Oaks TV sharing reviews and new book & DVD news
  • Enjoys all kinds of books and joins other readers in the Sit & Read Fellowship
  • Designs greeting cards as a member of the Copeland Card Crafters

When Kay and Jim’s children grew up and moved away, they looked for a vibrant community in which to write the new chapter in their life. They heard great things about Copeland Oaks through their United Methodist Church family. Married 53 years, they enjoy the community, the activities and the independence that Copeland Oaks provides. From reading to Bible study and music, our eighty groups offer residents many ways to stay active and intellectually engaged at Copeland Oaks.

Get to Know Lisa Ham, Copeland Food Service Department

Dependable is the word most commonly used to describe Lisa Ham’s work in the Copeland Oaks Food Service Department. Lisa is being honored as the winner of the June Oaks Award. Given monthly, OAKS stands for “Outstanding Acts of Kindly Service.”

Co-workers nominating Lisa for the honor also describe her as “honest” and “a team player.” A Copeland employee since 1978, Lisa began her career in food service in the dish room and “worked her way through the menu” now serving as a cook in charge of salads and desserts for Crandall Medical Center.

Since Lisa resides in Canfield, “dependable” has a strong meaning regarding her work ethic as she makes the 40-minute drive regardless of weather and road conditions.

“The award is given in appreciation to employees who demonstrate the spirit that makes Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center great,” said Dave Mannion, CEO.

Besides the recognition among peers, the award includes a plaque, certificate of appreciation and gift certificate.
