The Copeland Experience May 2017
Copeland Staff Goes Bald for St. Baldrick’s
Brian Waseman has become a “fixture” on the Copeland Oaks campus as the Spectrum technician assisting residents with cable TV and WIFI hookups as well as troubleshooting problems with digital equipment. When the Copeland housekeeping staff learned that Brian and his wife, Stephanie, had lost their daughter, Emily, at age 9 to childhood cancer, they wanted to help.
“It’s one thing to read statistics about serious diseases like childhood cancer, but when it strikes home, it has quite another effect,” said Tracy Burge, Copeland Oaks Housekeeping Manager. “We needed to do something to help.”
Luckily, the staff found the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. A non-profit organization, St. Baldrick’s helps to fund high impact clinical trials searching for new pediatric cancer treatments, train new researchers focusing on childhood cancer and provide supportive care to improve the quality of life for young childhood cancer patients and survivors.
The Foundation is also known for their Head-Shaving Events. Event participants shave their head in the go bald chair – not only raising funds, but raising awareness and showing support for the children who have lost their hair during treatment.
Hearing Brian’s story and wishing to help with St. Baldrick’s mission, Mark Baia and Mike Moss, Copeland Oaks Maintenance Dept. employees, volunteered at “GO BALD for St. Baldrick’s” to support the Waseman family in Emily’s honor. The Copeland Oaks housekeepers pitched in the funds to sponsor Mark and Mike for the shaving event held recently in Alliance.
Recent Events
Copeland Oaks events are always well attended and provide many an exciting story! Last month’s line-up was no exception.
Copeland Celebrates National Volunteer Week
Compassion and caring are the qualities that were celebrated recently as National Volunteer Week was observed on the Copeland Oaks campus. Volunteer residents were honored at a brunch reception held in the Williamsburg lounge to recognize their caring, compassion and dedication. Copeland Oaks residents staff the library, manage the Thrift Shop, the Acorn Gift and Consignment Shop and provide programming for the Copeland Oaks TV station.
They also serve as Helping Hands partnering with new residents learning Copeland campus life, serve as Caring Friends visiting folks in residence at Crandall Medical Center and provide many other special advantages to the Copeland community.
“From tending the altar flowers in the chapel to serving as members of the Resident Liaison Committee, resident volunteers foster the culture of service and enhance the quality of life for which Copeland Oaks is known,” said Jackie Palmer, Coordinator for Independent Living. “We want to recognize them for their selfless gifts of time and talent.”
During the event, residents were invited to have fun photos taken with western-style props.

The concert will open appropriately with, “How Can I Keep From Singing.” Guaranteed to get your toes a tappin’ is, “Order My Steps,” a Black Gospel rendition. The program of sacred music will include traditional favorites such as, “Down To the River to Pray.” The Copeland Men’s Quartet will croon, “Moon River,” and “Side By Side.” The singers will offer a choral showcase of tunes from “Fiddler on the Roof” to round out the performance.
Accompanying the singers is Jane Beck. Special attraction will be a “mystery guest.”
You are invited to come to the Copeland campus early and enjoy dinner at the Lakeview Terrace restaurant before the concert. A great night out!
A Message from Dave Mannion, CEO
Copeland Oaks Looks to Past, Present and Future
At Copeland Oaks, we believe in growing our own. In the corporate world our philosophy would be defined as a “promote from within” policy. This means that Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center have a commitment to consider current employees for new or replacement job opportunities and promotions before hiring candidates from outside of the organization.
People are motivated when we look for future talent among our current pool of employees. Knowing that Copeland and Crandall “grow our own” serves as a recruitment tool for support staff who wish to pursue a long-term career path within the organization.
Current employees understand our culture, mission and goals. Because they are already part of the team, they know how to get work done through the policies and procedures that are in place and their established relationships within the company. This allows us to be good stewards of our resources because it saves on advertising and orientation costs.
Our nursing assistant training program offers an opportunity for many to enter into a healthcare career. Many of our STNAs have pursued additional training to become Licensed Practical Nurses and completed college programs to be Licensed Registered Nurses. Copeland Oaks provides opportunities for internships to college students and Crandall Medical Center has guided Administrators in Training (AIT) through their field experience requirements.
We want to send a strong message to the members of our Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center teams that we value loyalty and performance. We want to recognize employees who are highly self-motivated to expand their knowledge and skills with opportunities that lead to personal and professional growth.
By identifying the right skills in good workers and giving them the right training and tools to become successful as they are promoted, we can ensure that Copeland Oaks remains a strong, stable and prosperous community.

Meet Neil Eft. He’s made himself quite a home at Copeland Oaks…but that’s pretty easy to do, with its many amenities. The former chemical engineer hasn’t exactly retired – he simply applies his engineering physics to the billiard table. Outdoors lovers will enjoy our hiking and nature trails and our lake. Residents who prefer the indoors love our activity programs, social hall, woodshop, rec room and even our billiards…as long as Neil isn’t running the table on them! Our residents like Neil share a zest for life and new experiences. At Copeland Oaks, they live life to the fullest.
Meet Katie Taylor, Crandall Medical Center STNA
When the nursing 2nd floor staff at Crandall Medical Center kept getting compliments from the family members of residents, they wanted to recognize Katie Taylor for her dedication as a caregiver.
Katie Taylor, State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA), has been honored as Copeland Oaks/Crandall Medical Center Employee of the Month for April. “Katie is always so kind with our residents and with her co-workers,” wrote one of Katie’s nursing supervisors. Another complimented Katie on her “patience and sweet demeanor.”
A graduate of South Range High School, Katie completed the phlebotomy course at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, and decided a career in healthcare was for her. When a friend told Katie how much she enjoyed working as a nursing assistant, Katie applied to take the STNA training program at Crandall Medical Center. “That was 4 years ago, and I have enjoyed working at Crandall ever since,” remembered Katie.
Katie now lives in Leetonia where she and her sister, Jodi, share care for their grandmother. In her free time, Katie enjoys going to tractor pulls and is looking forward to an exciting summer.
